Sirasa TV – Leading the Way in Maritime Awareness

Sirasa is promoting the “Sea of Sri Lanka” while much of the media is sleeping today. This commitment stands in stark contrast to other media outlets, which have largely overlooked this crucial aspect of our nation’s heritage and economy. Sirasa consistently allocates its prime airtime to broadcast informative advertisements about the “Sea of Sri Lanka.” Unlike typical commercials, these broadcasts are not driven by business interests but by a genuine intent to inform and educate the public.

Sirasa TV had the potential to sell their prime-time slots for substantial sums. However, they chose instead to dedicate this valuable airtime to informing the public about Sri Lanka’s ocean resources. Since 2016, we have been doing a lot of work to educate people about the Sea of srilanka and ocean resources, as well as their values. This initiative underscores the importance of informing the public directly, rather than relying solely on government officials and politicians, who have often been unresponsive to numerous notifications and letters. The bureaucratic suppression of critical information highlights a profound knowledge gap that needs addressing.

A notable instance of Sirasa’s commitment was showcased in today’s program “Pathikada,” featuring Retired Rear Admiral Jayaratne. He provided a clear and simple discussion on current maritime issues, making it easy for people to understand. Such efforts are vital in making complex subjects accessible to the general populace, who can then advocate for necessary governmental and political transformations.

Our approach to raising public awareness is driven by the belief that informed citizens will lead the charge towards innovation. In Sri Lanka, the ocean is often viewed merely as a source of fish and a place to ride waves. However, the true potential lies in the untapped resources beneath the sea, which can significantly bolster the national economy if harnessed innovatively. Engaging the youth is crucial in this endeavor, as their awareness and subsequent actions can drive substantial progress.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sirasa TV for their role in this educational campaign. This initiative, which began under the visionary leadership of media legend Killy Maharaja and continues with his son the present chairman and Chevaan Daniel as the CEO , reflects a deep-seated interest in the ocean and its sustainable management.

While UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water is valid until 2030, our progress has been very slow. However, it is not too late. Many aspects of this goal extend beyond 2030 and require ongoing efforts. By maintaining our focus on sustainability and protecting marine resources, we have the potential to make significant strides and strengthen our economy.

Thank you, Sirasa, for your invaluable contribution to this cause.
